Investigating elevational gradients of species richness in a Mediterranean plant hotspot using a published flora

چکیده

The Apuan Alps are one of the most peculiar mountain chain in Mediterranean, being very close to coastline and reaching an elevation almost 2000 m. Based on published flora, we investigated distribution plant species richness along whole elevational gradient this considering: (i) all species, (ii) endemic versus alien species; (iii) functional groups based Raunkiær life forms (RLF). Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) were used analyse patterns gradient, models area belts fitted test effect surface area. Our results showed decreasing with increasing elevation. In contrast, increased gradient. Alien mainly distributed at low elevations, but result should be taken caution since historical data. Species not equally gradient: chamaephytes hemicryptophytes richest high while therophytes highest elevations. findings suggest that there is a major composition could reflect evolutionary history. Furthermore, highlight key role floras as relevant source biodiversity

Elevational Gradients in Species Richness

The abiotic and biotic gradients on mountains have enormous potential to improve our understanding of species distributions, species richness patterns and conservation. Here we describe how abiotic factors change with elevation, how flora and fauna respond to these changes and how elevational species richness patterns have been studied to uncover drivers of biodiversity. There are four main tre...

Geomorphic controls on elevational gradients of species richness.

Elevational gradients of biodiversity have been widely investigated, and yet a clear interpretation of the biotic and abiotic factors that determine how species richness varies with elevation is still elusive. In mountainous landscapes, habitats at different elevations are characterized by different areal extent and connectivity properties, key drivers of biodiversity, as predicted by metacommu...

Climate-Induced Elevational Range Shifts and Increase in Plant Species Richness in a Himalayan Biodiversity Epicentre

Global average temperature increase during the last century has induced species geographic range shifts and extinctions. Montane floras, in particular, are highly sensitive to climate change and mountains serve as suitable observation sites for tracing climate-induced biological response. The Himalaya constitute an important global biodiversity hotspot, yet studies on species' response to clima...

Patterns of reptile and amphibian species richness along elevational gradients in Mt. Kenya.

Faunal species richness is traditionally assumed to decrease with increasing elevation and decreasing primary productivity. Species richness is reported to peak at mid-elevation. This survey examines the herpetofaunal diversity and distribution in Mt. Kenya (central Kenya) by testing the hypothesis that changes in species richness with elevation relate to elevation-dependent changes in climate....

The mid-domain effect applied to elevational gradients: species richness of small mammals in Costa Rica

The striking ecological changes that occur along elevational gradients drew the attention of early researchers, such as Darwin (1839, 1859), von Humboldt (1849), Wallace (1876, 1878) and Merriam (1890). Although latitudinal gradients in species richness have received more attention, elevational patterns have been addressed in the literature recently for various taxa. A recent issue of Global Ec...
